Installer removing and refitting a sliding insert by lifting the panel out of a sliding door track on moving day

Moving House? Taking Your Sliding Pet Insert With You

In the UAE, moving house is not a rare event — leases turn over, families upgrade from apartments to villas, and postings change. So a fair question follows any pet door purchase: what happens to it when I move? For a sliding insert, the answer is unusually good. Because the insert is never cut into or drilled into your door, it lifts out of the track, travels with you, and can often be refitted in the next home. This article explains taking your sliding insert when you move: how removal works, what decides whether the same panel fits the new door, and how removing and refitting a sliding insert fits into a renter’s move-out.

Why an insert can move house with you

Most pet doors are married to the opening they were fitted into. A flap in a fabricated glass panel belongs to that panel; a flap in a wooden door belongs to that door. A sliding insert is different in kind: it is a self-contained panel that stands in the track under its own fit, sealed with brush and compression seals rather than fixed with screws, sealant or cuts. Nothing about the original door was altered to install it, so nothing needs repairing when it leaves. Removal is the installation run in reverse — which is also why the insert is 100% rental-friendly and needs no landlord NOC at either end of its life in a home.

Removing and refitting a sliding insert, step by step

Step 1: The lift-out

The insert is unseated from the track and lifted clear, the same way it went in. The sliding door then closes against its frame exactly as it did before the insert was fitted. There are no holes to fill, no glass to reinstate and no marks to make good — the door is returned to its original state in the same visit.

Step 2: Transport

The panel is glass and aluminium, so it travels like glass: upright, padded, and kept flat-supported rather than laid under boxes. If you are using a removals company, tell them it is a glazed panel; they handle such items routinely. Keep the flap’s locking panel or cover with it if your model has one.

Step 3: The new track check

Before anyone promises a refit, the new door’s track has to be measured — height, depth and profile, the same measurements the insert was originally built from. Sliding tracks are not standardised across UAE buildings, and villa systems in particular vary by developer and era. This check decides everything that follows.

Step 4: Refit, adjust, or rebuild

If the new track matches the insert’s dimensions, the panel is seated, the seals are checked, and your pet is back in business the same visit. If the new opening is a different height or the track profile differs, the honest options are an adjustment where the design allows, or a new insert built to the new measurements — the flap itself and your pet’s sizing carry over either way.

When the old insert will not fit the new door

It is better to be plain about this: a made-to-measure panel fits the door it was measured for. A taller new doorway, a much deeper track or a change from a two-panel door to a wide multi-panel system can all mean the original panel does not transfer. What never changes is the approach — the new door gets measured, the insert specification is confirmed from photos first, and in the standard white aluminium frame with clear glass, a same-day fitting is possible when booked before 10 AM. If you have your eye on a frame colour to match the new home, a custom RAL powder-coated finish takes 2–3 days, and a move is often the natural moment to do it.

For renters: the cleanest exit in the building

Tenants feel the benefit twice. At the old home, the insert lifts out and the landlord’s door is exactly as it was at check-in — nothing to declare, nothing to repair, no deduction argument about altered glass. Compare that with the glass panel route, where the original panel has been stored and is swapped back in about 30 minutes, and you can see the family resemblance: both methods were designed so the property is handed back untouched. At the new home, the same insert may well refit — and if it does, your pet’s door costs you nothing but the fitting visit.

Frequently asked questions

Can I remove the insert myself?

Many owners do lift their own insert out for a deep clean or a furniture move, and the design allows it. For a house move, we recommend we handle it or at least talk you through your model first — the panel is glass, and a twisted lift at the wrong angle is how edges get chipped.

Will my insert fit the new home’s sliding door?

Only if the new track’s height, depth and profile match what the panel was built for. That is a measurement, not a guess: send us photos and the rough dimensions of the new door before moving day and we will give you a straight answer.

What if the new home has no sliding door where I need the flap?

Then the insert is not the tool for that opening, and the replacement glass panel route usually is — for fixed panels and openable doors, your original glass is stored and swapped back in about 30 minutes if you move again. The flap sizing for your pet carries across.

How should the insert be packed for the move?

Upright, padded on both faces, with the edges protected and nothing stacked against the glass. Treat it as you would a framed mirror or a glass tabletop and it will travel without drama.

Should I remove the insert before my landlord’s move-out inspection?

Yes — that is exactly how the handover is meant to work. With the insert out, the door is in its original condition for the inspection, and there is nothing about the pet door left to discuss.
