XL Dog Doors for Labradors, Golden Retrievers and Huskies: The 36×65 cm Guide

Big dogs are the ones most often let down by pet door sizing. A Labrador can physically squeeze through a Large flap, so owners assume Large is enough — then watch the dog duck, twist its shoulders and start avoiding the door it uses twenty times a day. An XL dog door for large breeds is built around a genuine 36×65 cm opening that a big dog walks through at its natural height, without contorting itself to fit furniture made for a smaller animal — see the full range of XL dog doors for large breeds.

The three sizes, and where XL begins

We fit three dog door sizes in the UAE. Medium is a 23×35 cm opening, suiting breeds such as the Bulldog, Shih Tzu and Poodle. Large is 28×45 cm, the right size for Beagles and Pointers. X-Large is 36×65 cm — and it is the size for Labradors, Golden Retrievers, Huskies and Great Danes.

The jump from Large to XL is the biggest in the range, and deliberately so. A Large flap’s 45 cm height asks a Labrador to lower its head and hunch its shoulders on every pass; the XL’s 65 cm height clears the shoulder line of a big breed standing normally. Width matters just as much: 36 cm gives a broad-chested Retriever room to pass at a slight angle, the way dogs actually walk through doors, rather than edge-on like a letter through a slot.

Why under-sizing an XL dog fails

A dog that finds a door uncomfortable does not complain — it adapts, and the adaptations are easy to misread as stubbornness.

  • Ducking and twisting. The dog lowers its head, rolls one shoulder through first, then the other. It works, but it is effortful, and dogs ration effort. The door gets used less.
  • Catching the back and hips. A flap opening that is too low brushes along the dog’s back, and a narrow one catches the hips. Big breeds are prone to joint stiffness as they age, and a door that rubs makes an older dog reluctant long before it becomes impossible.
  • Refusal after a scare. One clumsy pass — a flap dropping onto the dog’s back mid-squeeze — can undo weeks of confidence. Generous sizing is what prevents the squeeze in the first place.
  • Wear on the flap itself. A dog forcing its full weight against an undersized flap flexes it harder on every pass, which ages the flap and its seal faster.

None of this shows up on day one. It shows up over months, which is why sizing for the breed label alone is not enough — the next section is the check that settles it.

Confirming your dog really needs XL

Measure, do not guess. Stand your dog squarely against a wall on a hard floor and mark the height of the top of its shoulder blades; then measure across the widest point of its chest or shoulders. If the shoulder height approaches or passes the 45 cm height of a Large flap, or the chest width is close to 28 cm, your dog belongs in XL. Most adult Labradors, Golden Retrievers and Huskies meet both tests comfortably.

Two edge cases are worth knowing. A tall, slim dog may clear a Large on width but still need XL for height — height wins, because a dog can angle through width but cannot shrink its shoulders. And a young dog that currently fits a Large will not stay that size: if your Labrador or Retriever is still growing, fit the XL it will grow into rather than the Large it will grow out of.

Where an XL dog door for large breeds can go

An opening this size needs a panel with room to hold it, and in UAE homes that usually means one of three places. In a glass door or fixed glass panel, the XL flap sits in a made-to-measure replacement panel; your original glass is stored and swapped back in 30 minutes when you move out, so the fitting is 100% rental-friendly with no landlord NOC. In a sliding door, the flap goes into a track insert — a standard white aluminium frame with clear glass can be fitted the same day if booked before 10 AM, while custom RAL powder-coated frames matched to your existing aluminium take 2–3 days. XL flaps can also go through a wall or a suitable wooden door where glass is not an option.

For dogs we fit Hakuna Pets and PetSafe doors. On an XL opening the seal matters more than ever, because a big flap is a big area for cooled air to escape through: the magnetic seals on our dog doors pull the flap shut behind the dog and hold it closed, keeping the air conditioning in and the heat and dust out.

Frequently asked questions

Is XL overkill for a smaller Labrador?

Measure first. A compact female Labrador whose shoulder height and chest width sit well inside the Large opening can use a Large happily. But if either measurement is anywhere near the Large limits, choose XL — a dog at the top of one size belongs in the next size up, and a slightly generous door costs the dog nothing.

Can a Great Dane really use a 36×65 cm door?

Yes — the X-Large at 36×65 cm is the size we fit for Great Danes as well as Labradors, Golden Retrievers and Huskies. Danes are tall but slim through the chest for their height, and the 65 cm opening clears their shoulder line when the flap is set at the right height in the panel.

Will a bigger door let more heat into the house?

Only if it seals badly. The flap itself is rigid and insulated by its fit in the frame, and the magnetic seal holds it shut between passes, so the cooled air stays in. A correctly sized XL that a dog uses cleanly, without holding it open while squeezing through, usually wastes less cooled air than an undersized door the dog struggles with.

Can one XL door serve my big dog and my cat?

Often, yes — cats are unbothered by a large opening and many use the dog’s door happily. Bear in mind the XL flap is heavier than a cat flap; a small cat may find it stiff to push. Cats over 4 kg need a Large cat flap of their own in any case, so households with a big cat and a big dog sometimes take one of each.

How long does fitting an XL door in glass take?

The panel is made to measure first, with the flap fitted into it, and the swap itself is a short visit — your original glass comes out whole and goes into storage, and the new panel goes in. Send us your dog’s measurements and a photo of the door, and we will confirm the size and the panel before anything is made.
