For an older dog, a dog door is not a convenience — it is independence. The arthritic Labrador who cannot wait for someone to notice she needs the garden, the elderly Beagle whose bladder is less patient than it was: these dogs need access on their own schedule, and they need a door their joints can still manage. That is what a dog door for senior dogs really means: a door specified around comfort. Our approach to dog doors for senior and arthritic dogs starts from the dog’s body as it is now: lower the threshold, lighten the push, widen the margin for error, and the door stays usable years longer.
The step-over: the single most important measurement
The rise is the height of the bottom of the flap opening above the floor — the step the dog lifts its legs over on every pass. A young dog hops a high rise without thinking; an arthritic dog has to lift stiff front legs, shift its weight onto sore hindquarters and haul itself through. Every unnecessary centimetre of rise is effort multiplied by every garden trip, every day.
For a senior dog we set the rise as low as the panel allows, so the dog walks through with something close to its natural stride rather than climbing. When you enquire, the measurement that matters most is your dog’s belly clearance — the gap between its chest and the floor. The rise must sit comfortably below it, because a dog that catches its belly on the bottom of the opening will start refusing the door, and owners often misread that refusal as the dog “forgetting” its training. It has not forgotten. The door has become sore to use.

Sizing up a dog door for senior dogs with stiff bodies
Our sizes are Medium at 23×35 cm (Bulldog, Shih Tzu, Poodle), Large at 28×45 cm (Beagle, Pointer) and X-Large at 36×65 cm (Labrador, Golden Retriever, Husky, Great Dane). A senior dog should be fitted at the generous end of its size, and there are two reasons to size up at any boundary.
First, an arthritic dog moves less precisely. It approaches at an angle, sways a little, and does not tuck itself neatly. Extra width means the door forgives the approach instead of punishing it with a knock on the hips. Second, a stiff dog cannot duck and twist the way a young one can. A taller opening lets it pass with its head and spine in their natural line — important for dogs whose necks and backs are part of the problem. If your dog’s measurements sit anywhere near the top of one size, the next size up is the kind choice, and it costs the dog nothing.
The push: flap weight and seals
An older dog pushes with less force, so the flap’s resistance matters. The doors we fit for dogs — Hakuna Pets and PetSafe — use magnetic seals that pull the flap shut and hold it closed against the heat and dust. That seal is what keeps cooled air in, and on a correctly fitted door it releases with a firm chest push rather than a shove. What an old dog cannot manage is a warped, swollen or ill-fitting flap that sticks in its frame; if your existing door has become hard work, the flap itself may be the problem rather than the dog, and a fresh, true-running flap restores easy use.
Technique helps too. Dogs taught to push with the chest, just below the chin, use their strongest muscles. An older dog that has drifted into pushing with its nose — the weakest option, and an uncomfortable one — can usually be re-taught in a few short, rewarded sessions, and the difference in effort is obvious.
A practical fitting plan for an older dog
- Measure the dog as it is now: shoulder height, widest width and belly clearance, and tell us about any stiffness, hip or joint issues and whether the dog struggles with steps elsewhere in the home.
- Choose the door nearest the dog’s world: the panel closest to where the dog sleeps and rests shortens the journey, which matters at 3 a.m.
- Think about the floor either side: the door works best where the dog’s footing is secure; a dog that slips on approach loses confidence in the whole route.
- Keep the swap rental-safe: in glass, the flap sits in a made-to-measure replacement panel, your original glass is stored and swapped back in 30 minutes at move-out, and no landlord NOC is needed. Sliding-door inserts in the standard white frame with clear glass can be fitted the same day if booked before 10 AM, with custom RAL powder-coating in 2–3 days.
Frequently asked questions
My old dog has stopped using a door it has used for years. Is it the dog or the door?
Check the door first. A flap that has warped, a seal that has hardened or a rise the dog’s joints have outgrown will all present as a dog that “won’t” go through. Once the door is easy again, most dogs return to it quickly — and if stiffness is progressing, your vet can advise on managing the arthritis itself alongside the door fix.
How low can the step-over be set?
As low as the panel and frame allow, and for a senior dog we set it deliberately at the bottom of that range. The governing measurement is your dog’s belly clearance: the rise sits comfortably below it so the dog steps rather than climbs.
Is a bigger door harder for an old dog to push?
The opening is bigger, but a correctly fitted flap on a quality frame swings true and seals with magnets rather than friction. Most older dogs find a generous, free-swinging flap easier than a tight door they have to squeeze and force at the same time.
Which size for an elderly Labrador?
X-Large, at 36×65 cm — the same size as for a young Labrador, with the rise set low. The extra height lets her pass without ducking, which is exactly what a stiff neck and shoulders need.
Can a senior dog learn a new door if we move house?
Yes, and usually faster than owners expect, because the concept is already known — only the location is new. A few guided passes with the route made easy, and the dog transfers its habit to the new door.
