A cat flap works hard in a UAE home. It swings dozens of times a day, collects a paw print or two on every pass, and sits in exactly the place where fine desert dust settles. After a few months the signs build up: the flap clicks instead of swinging silently, it hangs a fraction open, or your cat starts pushing at it with a paw instead of walking straight through. None of that usually means the flap is broken. It means it is dirty. Here is how to clean a cat flap so it swings freely and seals shut again — a ten-minute job with warm water, a soft cloth and no special tools. Fitting the flap well in the first place matters just as much, and our guide to cleaning and maintaining your cat flap covers how a properly installed flap should move and seal when it is clean.
Why UAE dust is tough on cat flaps
Dust here is not like dust in a cooler climate. Shamal winds carry a fine, gritty powder that gets everywhere, and a cat flap sits low on the door, right in the dust line. Grit works its way into the pivot at the top of the flap, where it acts like sandpaper and makes the swing stiff and noisy. It packs into the brush draught excluder around the frame until the brushes stand stiff and stop sealing. And it coats the magnets set into the flap and frame, weakening the pull that should snap the flap shut after every pass.
The result is a flap that lets cooled air leak out and warm, dusty air creep in — and a cat who has to shove harder to get through, which wears the flap faster still. A short clean undoes almost all of it.
How to clean a cat flap, step by step
Start with the loose dirt
Brush or vacuum the whole unit first: the frame, the tunnel walls and both faces of the flap. A soft brush attachment lifts the grit out of the brush seal without bending it. Pay attention to the bottom corners of the tunnel, where dust and fur collect in a felt-like mat.
Wash the flap and tunnel
Wipe everything down with a cloth dampened in warm water with a drop of mild washing-up liquid. Work over both sides of the flap, the inside of the tunnel and the frame edges. Rinse with a clean damp cloth so no soap film is left behind — residue attracts more dust. Dry the flap with a soft cloth or let it air-dry before you test the swing.
Clean the magnets and seals
Find the magnet strips, usually set into the bottom edge of the flap and the frame it meets. Wipe them clean and check the flap now drops shut with a positive little pull. Run a finger along the brush seal: it should feel soft and springy. Gently comb out embedded grit with an old soft toothbrush.
Check the pivot
Swing the flap by hand. It should move silently through its full arc and fall back to centre on its own. If it still drags after cleaning, look for grit packed at the pivot ends and flick it out with the toothbrush. Avoid oil or spray lubricants here — they turn the next layer of dust into grinding paste.

How often to clean, and the warning signs
In most UAE homes a proper clean once a month is plenty, with a quick wipe of the flap faces in between if paw prints bother you. Homes near open desert, construction or a busy road may need the full routine every couple of weeks in shamal season. Clean sooner if you notice any of these: the flap squeaking or clicking, the flap sitting visibly ajar, a draught you can feel at ankle height, dust streaks on the floor inside the door, or a cat who has started hesitating at a flap it used happily before.
When cleaning is not enough
Cleaning restores a sound flap; it cannot repair a worn one. If the flap itself is cracked, warped or yellowed stiff, if the brush seal has worn down to stubble, or if the magnets no longer pull the flap closed even when spotless, the moving parts have reached the end of their life and a replacement flap is the honest fix.
Microchip flaps need one extra bit of care. Models from SureFlap and PetSafe read your cat’s chip through a sensor area in the tunnel, so keep that part of the tunnel wiped clean and free of the dust mat that builds up at the bottom — a dirty sensor area can mean missed reads and a locked-out cat. Battery-powered models also deserve a battery check while you have the cloth out.
Frequently asked questions
How often should I clean my cat flap?
About once a month for most homes. If you live near open ground or building work, or during dusty shamal spells, check the pivot and magnets every couple of weeks — a flap that stops sealing wastes cooled air every hour it hangs open.
Can I use bleach or strong cleaners on the flap?
No. Harsh chemicals and abrasive pads can cloud, craze or stiffen the flap material and damage the seals. Warm water with a drop of mild washing-up liquid, a soft cloth and an old toothbrush for the corners are all you need.
My flap still sticks after cleaning. What next?
Check the pivot ends for packed grit and make sure nothing is trapped in the brush seal. If it still drags, the flap or pivot is likely worn rather than dirty, and a replacement flap is the fix — bring us a photo and the model name and we can advise.
Will cleaning stop the draught from my cat flap?
If the draught comes from dirt stopping the flap closing, yes. If the brush seal has worn flat or the flap no longer sits square in the frame, cleaning will not restore the seal and the worn part needs replacing.
Do microchip cat flaps need different care?
Mostly the same routine, plus two extras: keep the sensor area inside the tunnel clean so the flap reads your cat’s chip reliably, and check the batteries on schedule. Manual flaps from PetSafe and Closer Pets have no sensor or batteries to worry about.
Keep your flap swinging freely
A clean flap is a quiet flap, a sealed flap and a flap your cat trusts. If yours is past cleaning — cracked, warped or refusing to seal — message us on WhatsApp at +971 52 443 2655 with a photo and we will tell you honestly whether a replacement flap sorts it, or email us at admin@petdoorfix.com. And if you are planning a first flap, knowing how to clean a cat flap from day one is what keeps it working like new for years.
