Mirdif and Al Barsha are family villa country: established streets, proper gardens, and dogs that are very much part of the household. They are also neighbourhoods where the dog door question is rarely about the glass — it is about the dog. A flap bought by guesswork ends up too small for a growing Labrador or comically large for a Shih Tzu, and in glass there is no trimming it down afterwards.
Dog door installation Dubai villa owners get right starts with honest sizing, so this guide works through the three sizes in real breeds, how to measure your own dog against them, and the fitting routes used in Mirdif and Al Barsha patio glass. For booking and coverage, see our page on dog door installation in Dubai.
Dog door installation Dubai: start with the dog, not the door
A dog door is sized by its flap opening, and the opening your dog needs is set by two measurements: the width of the dog at the shoulders and chest, and the height from the floor to the top of the shoulders. The flap must be wider than the dog’s widest point and tall enough that the dog passes through without ducking hard or catching its back — a dog that has to squeeze will simply refuse, and a door the dog refuses is an expensive ornament.
Measure your dog standing, add a little growing room for any dog under eighteen months, and compare honestly against the three sizes below. If your dog falls between sizes, size up: a dog grows into a larger flap happily, but never into a smaller one.
Medium — 23×35 cm
For smaller, lighter breeds: Shih Tzus, Poodles and similar dogs that slip through without thinking about it. A Medium in a villa patio panel is also a common choice for homes whose largest garden user is a cat — although cats follow their own sizing rule, covered below.
Large — 28×45 cm
The middleweight workhorse: Beagles, Pointers, Cocker Spaniels and dogs of similar build. Many Mirdif and Al Barsha family dogs land here, and it is the size owners most often underestimate — a solid Beagle is a bigger dog at the shoulders than he looks on the sofa.
X-Large — 36×65 cm
For Labradors, Golden Retrievers, Huskies and Great Danes, and any dog whose chest and shoulders demand real room. XL doors are fitted with heavy-duty frames, because a 35-kilo dog passing through twenty times a day is a structural question, not just a sizing one.
Fitting routes in villa glass
With the size settled, the door goes into the glass by one of the standard reversible routes. Where the dog door belongs in the sliding patio door, a made-to-measure insert stands in the track with the dog door built in — in the standard white aluminium and clear glass specification, an insert booked before 10 AM can be fitted the same day. Where the better position is a fixed panel or an openable door, a replacement double-glazed unit is fabricated with the opening formed in the factory; your original glass is stored whole and can be swapped back in about 30 minutes, which keeps rented villas in both communities fully deposit-safe with no landlord NOC needed.
The dog doors themselves are from Hakuna Pets and PetSafe, chosen because their magnetic seals pull the flap shut and latch it behind the dog. In a Mirdif or Al Barsha summer, that latch is the difference between a dog door and a permanent warm draught at ankle height.

Cats in a dog-door household
Many villa homes run both species. Two points matter. First, the cat sizing rule is independent of the dog sizes: any cat over 4 kg needs a Large flap, so a chunky British Shorthair sharing a Medium dog door will not be comfortable — check both animals against the chart before choosing. Second, if the garden gets visiting cats and you want entry limited to your own animals, talk to us about the flap options when you book; the right locking arrangement depends on which animals need access, and it is far easier to plan before the panel is made than after.
Frequently asked questions
My dog is between sizes. Which should I choose?
Size up. A flap slightly too large costs your dog nothing — he will use it without noticing — while a flap slightly too small will be refused, squeezed through under protest, or outgrown within months if the dog is young.
How do I measure my dog for a door?
Measure the widest point of the shoulders and chest, and the height to the top of the shoulders while standing. Send us those two figures with the breed on WhatsApp and we will match them to the M, L or XL opening before anything is made.
Will a big dog door let the heat in?
The flap is the only moving part, and the doors we fit use magnetic seals that latch the flap shut after every pass. Combined with a factory-sealed panel or a track-measured insert, cooled-air loss is a fraction of what an open patio door costs you in a Dubai summer.
Can one door serve my Labrador and my cat?
Often, yes — the cat uses the dog’s door happily if she is confident. But if your cat is over 4 kg she needs a Large opening as a minimum, and if you want the cat kept in while the dog goes out, separate access is the better plan. Tell us the household line-up and we will advise honestly.
Do you cover both Mirdif and Al Barsha?
Yes. Our teams work in Dubai daily, and both communities are standard coverage for measuring, fitting and the move-out swap-back if you are renting.
