Every dog door failure we have ever been called about was a sizing failure. The flap was bought by guess, the dog took one look at it, and the household went back to opening the patio door forty times a day. In the family homes of Ajman Uptown and Al Rawda, dog door installation ajman owners ask us about usually comes down to one thing: which size is actually right for their dog? This guide works through the size chart, how to measure your dog properly, and where the door can go. Our dog door installation in Ajman runs on a scheduled weekly route, so the size is settled from your photos and measurements before anything is made.
Dog Door Installation Ajman: Start With the Dog, Not the Door
A dog door is fitted around a dog, not around a gap. The flap has to clear the dog’s shoulders and chest with room to spare, at a height the dog can step through without crouching or jumping. A door that is merely passable will be used reluctantly; a door that is comfortable becomes invisible within a week. That is why the first thing we ask for on WhatsApp is not a photo of your door — it is your dog’s breed, weight and shoulder height. The door photos come second, to decide where the correctly sized flap will live.
The Size Chart: M, L and XL
Dog doors follow three fixed flap sizes:
- Medium — 23×35 cm. For smaller, lighter dogs: Shih Tzus, Poodles and similar builds.
- Large — 28×45 cm. The mid-size workhorse: Beagles, Pointers and dogs of that stamp.
- X-Large — 36×65 cm. For the big family breeds: Labradors, Golden Retrievers, Huskies and Great Danes.
Two rules sit behind the chart. First, if your dog is between sizes, go up — a dog grows out of a snug flap, never into one. Second, puppies are sized for the adult they will become: tell us the breed and we will fit the adult size now, rather than replacing the door in eight months. For dog doors we fit Hakuna Pets and PetSafe, whose magnetic seals pull the flap shut behind the dog after every pass — the detail that keeps a big, well-used door from becoming a permanent air-conditioning leak.
How to Measure Your Dog
You only need two numbers, and a tape measure and thirty seconds will get both:
- Shoulder height. Measure from the floor to the top of your dog’s shoulders while they stand normally. The top of the flap opening should sit at or just above this line once fitted.
- Chest width. Measure the widest part of the chest. The flap width needs clear room either side — a wide-chested breed can need the next size up even if it is not especially tall.
Send both numbers with the breed when you message us. Between the chart, the breed and your measurements, the size is rarely in doubt — and if it is, we will say so and check at the measurement visit rather than guess.
Step-over height matters too, especially for older dogs and short-legged breeds. The bottom of the flap should sit low enough that your dog steps through rather than climbs or jumps, and that height is settled when the panel or insert is made — one more reason the dog is measured before the door is. A young, athletic dog forgives a high step-over; an older one simply stops going outside alone, and the door gets blamed for a measuring decision.

Where the Dog Door Goes
In Ajman family homes the flap usually lives in one of two places. It can be built into a factory-made replacement glass panel that takes the place of a fixed patio pane — your original glass is stored whole, never cut, and can be swapped back in about 30 minutes if you move or rent the house out later. Or it can be built into a made-to-measure insert that slots into the track of a sliding door, in standard white aluminium with clear glass or powder-coated in a custom RAL colour to match your frames, the coating adding 2–3 days. Both routes are measured on the scheduled weekly visit, fabricated in the workshop, and fitted on the route.
Frequently Asked Questions
My dog is between Medium and Large — which should I choose?
Large. Dogs use a comfortable door without thinking and avoid a tight one, and a young dog may still be growing into its frame. The size chart is a floor, not a target: when in doubt, the bigger flap is the one that gets used.
Will a big dog door let all the cooled air out?
Not if the flap seals. The Hakuna Pets and PetSafe dog doors we fit use magnetic seals that pull the flap closed and hold it shut after every pass, so the door is only open for the seconds the dog is actually going through it.
We have two dogs of very different sizes — can one door suit both?
Yes — size the door for the larger dog. The smaller dog will use the bigger flap quite happily. What does not work is the reverse: a large dog asked to use a small dog’s door will simply refuse.
My puppy is only four months old. What size do I fit?
The adult size for the breed. A Labrador puppy needs the X-Large it will use as an adult — 36×65 cm — fitted from the start. Tell us the breed when you book and we will size for the grown dog.
