How a Sliding Door Pet Insert Is Measured: Tracks, Height and the Photos We Need First

A sliding door pet insert is built for one door only: yours. Unlike a flap fitted into a replacement glass panel, an insert is a made-to-measure aluminium and glass panel that stands in your existing sliding track, so its success depends almost entirely on what happens before it is built. This guide walks through how sliding door pet inserts are measured, from the photos we ask you to send first to the final checks on fitting day, so you know exactly what sliding door pet insert measurements involve and why each one matters.

Why sliding door pet insert measurements decide the whole job

An insert has no frame of its own to hide behind. It stands in the same track your sliding door runs in, seals against the door panel beside it, and has to stay put every time the door is opened, closed and locked. If it is a few millimetres too short, it rattles and leaks cooled air. A few millimetres too tall, and it will not seat properly in the track at all. Too narrow for the opening, and the walk-through space beside it suffers; too wide, and the sliding door cannot close against it as it should.

That is why the measuring is treated as a process, not a single number on a quote. Three things are being established at once: the height the panel must be built to, the depth and shape of the track it must stand in, and the position the flap will sit at for your pet. Get those right and the fitting itself is straightforward. Get them wrong and no amount of adjusting on the day will fully rescue the result.

It starts with photos, not a tape measure

Before anyone visits, we ask you to WhatsApp us photographs of your sliding door. A good set of photos tells us most of what we need to know about the door type, and it lets us flag anything unusual while there is still time to plan around it.

The photos we ask for

  • The whole door, from inside. One shot of the full sliding door, closed, showing both panels and the frame. This tells us whether you have a two-panel door, a wider multi-panel system, and which panel actually slides.
  • The track, close up. A photograph along the bottom track, and if you can manage it, the top track too. Track depth and profile vary between door systems, and the insert’s feet and head have to suit the track it stands in.
  • The meeting point. Where the sliding panel closes against the frame or the fixed panel. The insert seals along this edge, so we want to see its shape.
  • Your pet. A photo of your dog or cat next to the door sounds informal, but it helps us judge flap size and position before we confirm anything.

If anything in the photos suggests a non-standard track — an unusually deep channel, a damaged rail, a door that has dropped on its rollers — we will tell you there and then, rather than arriving with a panel that was never going to fit.

What we measure on the day

Photos get us most of the way; the final measurements are taken at your door before the insert is built or confirmed.

Track height: the critical number

The vertical measurement from the bottom track to the head of the frame is the single most important figure. Inserts are sprung or seated into the track, and the panel height must match the opening precisely so it stands firm without forcing. We measure at more than one point along the opening, because older doors are not always perfectly level, and the build height has to suit the tightest point.

Track depth and profile

The insert sits within the track channel, so its depth matters as much as its height. A shallow track needs a slimmer footing; a deep, wide channel gives more room to work with. We also check the condition of the track itself — a build-up of sand and grit, common in UAE homes, can change how a panel seats, and the track is cleaned as part of the fitting.

Flap position and your pet’s measurements

The flap is not placed by eye. For dogs, sizing follows fixed dimensions: Medium at 23×35 cm, Large at 28×45 cm and X-Large at 36×65 cm, matched to your dog’s breed and build. For cats, the rule is that any cat over 4 kg needs a Large flap. We then set the flap height so your pet steps through rather than climbs or ducks — the bottom of the flap needs to sit low enough for a comfortable stride, with enough panel below and above it to keep the insert rigid.

From measurements to a fitted insert

Because the measuring process settles the specification early, the standard insert — a white aluminium frame with clear glass — can be fitted the same day when the booking is made before 10 AM. If you want the frame powder-coated in a custom RAL colour to match bronze, charcoal or other existing frames, that finish takes 2–3 days, and the measurements feed into that order in exactly the same way.

One honest note: if your sliding doors are reflective or tinted, an insert in clear glass will not match that finish, and where glass must match an existing reflective panel, a 100% identical shade cannot be guaranteed. We raise it at the photo stage, not after the fitting.

Frequently asked questions

Can I take the measurements myself and skip the visit?

You can measure the rough height and width of your opening to start the conversation, and we will happily talk you through it. The final build measurements, though, are confirmed by us at the door — track depth and profile are hard to capture with a tape measure alone, and the fit depends on them.

What if my track is an unusual depth or shape?

Send the close-up track photos and we will tell you honestly whether a standard insert suits it. Most residential tracks are fine; where a track is genuinely non-standard, we would rather say so before anything is built than force a panel that rattles.

How accurate do the photos need to be?

Clear and complete matters more than artistic. The full door in one frame, a close shot along the bottom track, and the closing edge in view will answer nearly every question we have. If a photo is too dark or cropped to judge, we will simply ask for another.

Do you measure my pet as well?

In effect, yes. Tell us the breed and approximate weight, and for dogs the flap size follows from the standard dimensions. A cat over 4 kg goes straight to a Large flap. If your pet is between sizes or unusually tall for its breed, the photo of your pet by the door helps us settle it.

How long does the measuring and fitting take?

The measurement itself is quick once we are at the door — it is the build that the measurements make possible. For the standard white frame and clear glass specification booked before 10 AM, measuring and fitting are completed the same day.
