Standard White vs. Custom RAL Powder-Coated Aluminium Pet Door Inserts: Which Should You Choose?

Every sliding door pet insert we fit is built the same way — the difference is the finish. The standard insert is white aluminium with clear glass and can be fitted the same day; a custom powder-coated insert is finished in a RAL colour matched to your existing frames, and takes 2–3 days. Choosing between them comes down to your frame colour, how visible the door is, and how quickly you need the flap working.

See our guide to sliding glass door pet inserts for the full service.

The standard white insert: ready the same day

The standard specification exists for one reason: speed. A white aluminium frame with clear glass is the finish we keep ready to build, so if you book before 10 AM, the insert can be measured and fitted the same day.

White is also the frame colour on a large share of UAE villa and apartment sliding doors, which is why the standard finish blends in unnoticed in so many homes. If your sliding frames are already white, there is no visual decision to make at all — the insert reads as part of the door, and the only question is the flap size inside it.

Even where the frames are not white, many owners happily choose the standard insert. On a rear garden door that is mostly glass, partly covered by curtains or blinds, or simply not a feature of the room, a clean white panel is a neat, deliberate-looking contrast rather than a mismatch. If the priority is a working flap today — a dog that needs garden access, a cat litter arrangement that cannot wait — white is the practical answer.

The custom powder-coated insert: matched to your frames

Newer and renovated UAE villas increasingly use dark sliding frames: bronze, charcoal, anthracite and black aluminium around large areas of glass. Against frames like those, a white panel is the first thing you see every time you cross the room.

A custom insert solves that by being powder-coated in a RAL colour chosen to match your existing frames before the insert is built. The coating is applied to the aluminium frame of the insert itself, so the finished panel sits in the track with the same colour and character as the door around it. The glass stays clear and the flap options are exactly the same — only the frame finish and the timeline change.

That timeline is the one trade-off: powder-coating adds a coating stage, so a custom finish takes 2–3 days rather than same-day. Nothing about the fitting itself changes once the coated frame is ready.

Our range of custom aluminium sliding door inserts covers both finishes alongside the sizing options; this article is about choosing between them.

When white works, and when matching matters

There is no wrong finish — there is only the finish that suits your door and your deadline. As a guide:

Standard white usually works well when:

  • Your existing sliding frames are white or a light colour
  • The door is a utility or garden door rather than a feature of the room
  • Curtains, blinds or furniture mean the frame is rarely seen in full
  • You need the flap fitted today and have booked before 10 AM

A custom powder-coated finish is usually worth the wait when:

  • Your frames are bronze, charcoal, anthracite or black
  • The sliding doors are floor-to-ceiling and dominate the room, as in many villa living spaces opening onto the garden
  • The door faces a majlis, a formal living area or a landscaped terrace where the finish is on show
  • You are an owner-occupier fitting the insert as a long-term part of the home

A simple way to decide

Stand where you normally sit in the room and look at the sliding door. If your eye goes to the garden and the glass, a white insert will disappear into that view well enough. If your eye goes to the dark frames — because they are a deliberate design feature of the villa — match them. And if you are genuinely torn, remember the deadline is real: white can be in the track today, while a matched finish needs its 2–3 days.

The flap inside is the same either way

Finish does not limit your flap choice. Dog flap sizes are identical in both finishes: Medium at 23×35 cm, Large at 28×45 cm and X-Large at 36×65 cm, for dogs from Shih Tzus and Poodles through Beagles and Pointers up to Labradors, Golden Retrievers, Huskies and Great Danes. For dog doors we fit Hakuna Pets and PetSafe, with magnetic seals that pull the flap shut behind your dog and help keep cooled air in and heat out.

For cats, the sizing rule is the same in any finish: any cat over 4 kg needs a Large flap, which covers many British Shorthairs, Ragdolls and Maine Coons. Cat flaps are manual four-way locking models, or microchip models from SureFlap and PetSafe that open only for your cat’s microchip — the better choice where stray cats visit. Closer Pets is supplied for manual four-way locking flaps only.

Both finishes are equally rental-friendly, too. Whichever you choose, the insert is a separate panel in the track: nothing is cut from your original door, no landlord NOC is needed, and the insert comes out again at move-out, leaving the door as it was.

One note on glass shades

Both finishes use clear glass. If your sliding doors are reflective or tinted, be aware that where any replacement glass panel is involved, a glass shade cannot be guaranteed 100% identical to the original — shades vary between batches and suppliers, and we will always flag that upfront rather than after a fitting.

Frequently asked questions

Is the same-day option only available in white?

Yes. Same-day fitting, when you book before 10 AM, applies to the standard white aluminium frame with clear glass. A custom RAL powder-coated finish takes 2–3 days because of the coating stage.

Which RAL colours can a custom insert be finished in?

The insert is powder-coated to match your existing frames — commonly bronze, charcoal, anthracite and black on UAE villas, or another RAL colour chosen against your frames. Send us a photo of your door frames and we will confirm the match before the insert is built.

Does a powder-coated insert work any differently once fitted?

No. The insert, the glass and the flap options are the same; only the frame colour and the fitting timeline differ. It slots into the same track and your sliding door closes against it in the same way.

Will a white insert look wrong against dark frames?

That depends on the room. On a rear or utility door it usually reads as a clean contrast, but against dark floor-to-ceiling frames in a main living space, most owners prefer the matched finish. A photo of your door helps us advise honestly either way.

Is a custom finish still rental-friendly?

Yes. The insert is a removable panel in the track in either finish — nothing is cut, and it comes out at move-out. Tenants more often choose white for speed, but the choice is yours.
